Apple has updated its App Store Review Guidelines to explicitly prohibit artificial intelligence tools that generate non-consensual intimate imagery. imagery, often referred to as ‘nudify’ apps. Under new section 1.2 rules, developers must implement content filters, establish reporting mechanisms for abusive material, and take action against users who post such content. The policy update follows pressure from regulators and civil organizations, as well as controversies involving xAI’s Grok chatbot. Apple also introduced rule 2.5.19 to combat “bait and switch” tactics, where apps are presented as harmless during review but later unlock prohibited features like “nudification” capabilities. Apple noted that attempting to conceal these capabilities through code obfuscation is grounds for removal from both the App Store and the Apple Developer Program. Non-compliance may result in application removal or account termination. The prohibitions also extend to apps facilitating human trafficking or child exploitation. To further strengthen enforcement, Apple has expanded its measures to ensure apps facilitating human trafficking or child exploitation are blocked from alternative distribution channels in addition to being removed from the App Store.
