Apple hardware roadmap and ~~camera-equipped AirPods~~ privacy-focused wearable leaks

Recent developments regarding Apple’s hardware roadmap continue to center on camera-equipped AirPods (codenamed B790 or B798). Discovered software assets in macOS Tahoe 26.7 developer firmware indicate these next-generation AirPods Pro will utilize low-resolution optical and infrared cameras to support “Visual Intelligence” and “Apple Intelligence.” Rather than capturing high-resolution media, these sensors are intended to provide real-time environmental context to Siri, allowing users to identify landmarks, read text on signboards or books, and recognize physical objects hands-free. The hardware may feature a slightly thicker stem and include a “Hair Detected” warning. Additionally, the sensors could enhance spatial audio by detecting which screen—such as a laptop, smartphone, or TV—a user is viewing to narrow audio focus. To address privacy concerns, the system may use hardware-based status LEDs. In response to widespread public distrust regarding covert recording, Apple is reportedly planning smart glasses that lack an accessible camera. This design strategy aims to prioritize privacy and social acceptance by focusing on AI-driven assistance through Apple Intelligence rather than photography or video capture. While sensors might still function in the background for environmental recognition, the device would not allow users to directly record their surroundings. Further signals of upcoming releases appeared via 37 new hardware identifiers added to Apple’s backend ahead of a “Surprise and Shine” event. These identifiers span iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and HomeAccessory categories. Specifically, seven identifiers linked to the iPhone lineup suggest the potential for a seventh model or regional variant alongside the rumored iPhone 18 series, which may include an “iPhone Ultra.” Other anticipated products include the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, M6-powered iMac and MacBook Pro models, and an OLED iPad mini. Public sentiment remains cautious; previous surveys showed 72% of 1,000 Americans worry about being secretly recorded by camera-equipped wearables, and 60% expressed distrust in manufacturers regarding data privacy.
