Apple has launched its ‘Ads on Maps’ advertising platform in the United States and Canada, allowing businesses to create targeted, location-based campaigns. While the platform was initially open for businesses to reserve space and create campaigns, Apple indicated that ads would not begin serving to users immediately. Sponsored content is designed to appear in the ‘Suggested Places’ section and at the top of relevant search results, with all sponsored locations being clearly labeled. Advertisers can manage media through Apple Business for smaller entities or use the broader Apple Ads platform for more granular control over keywords and scheduling. Apple reports that the service processes over one billion relevant business searches monthly, with approximately 50% resulting in user action. The user base includes a significant demographic of Gen Z and millennials, who comprise 57% of users according to the GWI Core Study. By late August, Apple began the official rollout of advertisements within the application, initially targeting users in the United States and Canada. To ensure transparency, sponsored content is identified with a blue ‘Ad’ label. Apple maintains that the model follows a privacy-first approach, stating that user location data and ad interactions are not associated with an Apple Account and that personal data remains on the user’s device. As the rollout progresses, Apple has implemented a limit of one advertisement per set of search results. The company uses contextual information, such as search terms and approximate location, to serve ads. Certain industries are prohibited from advertising on the platform, including bail bonds, cryptocurrency ATMs, and home services like plumbing or electrical work. Medical service advertisements may be permitted but are subject to case-by-case evaluation. Currently, there is no option for users to disable these advertisements within the app.
