Overview
Apple’s transition to proprietary M-series silicon has established a significant competitive advantage for the MacBook lineup. By designing both hardware and software in-house, Apple has achieved high performance and low power consumption, which has often doubled the battery life of comparable Windows-based laptops.
However, the efficiency gap between Apple’s ARM-based architecture and traditional x86 architectures is reportedly narrowing. Recent benchmarks comparing an Intel-equipped Dell XPS 13 to a MacBook suggest that under intensive workloads, the Intel-based device achieved higher performance per watt (6.21 GFLOPS/W) than the MacBook (5.38 GFLOPS/W). The Intel-based hardware also matched the MacBook’s efficiency during low-activity states, such as idling or web browsing.
