Apple is rolling out updates to its digital wallet ecosystem through iOS 27. Initial developments include the introduction of a ‘Discover’ section within the Wallet app, designed to provide educational guides and shortcuts for managing digital assets such as Apple Pay, transit cards, and digital keys. Subsequent updates focus on enhancing the Apple Pay experience. A redesigned checkout interface utilizes a visual carousel, allowing users to navigate between registered cards via intuitive swipes rather than text-based menus. This interface also includes a new grid view to display specific card details, such as rewards and balances. A partnership with American Express enables users to redeem Membership Rewards points directly within the Apple Pay checkout flow for online or in-app purchases, with points valued at 0.7 cents each. Additionally, a ‘Tap to Share’ feature is expected to launch this fall as an extension of Tap to Pay on iPhone, allowing users to securely share contact details, shipping addresses, and loyalty rewards with participating merchants via a simple tap. Apple Pay is also expanding its contactless utility through NFC technology. Users can now perform cardless cash withdrawals at major ATMs, including those from Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase, and Citibank. Furthermore, the parking application PayByPhone has integrated Apple Pay in France, allowing drivers to pay for parking sessions using cards stored in their Apple Wallet. Regarding security, Apple emphasizes proactive measures for lost devices. While lock screens provide primary defense through PINs, fingerprints, or facial recognition, users maintain the ability to remotely deactivate their digital wallets to prevent unauthorized financial access.
