Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Alfonso Raimo as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Terni-Narni-Amelia, succeeding Matteo Antonelli. The appointment was announced Antonelli, on September 15, 2026. Raimo, born in 1959 in Calabritto, 1959, previously served as the Titular Bishop of Termini Imerese and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno. His prior roles included serving as a parish priest in Fisciano and Eboli, a chaplain at the Eboli correctional facility, and a professor of theology. Upon his reassignment, Archbishop Andrea Bellandi of Salerno expressed pride and mixed emotions regarding the departure of his collaborator. In a farewell letter to the community of Termini Imerese, Raimo noted that his connection to the historic see was ‘more emotional than administrative,’ while expressing gratitude for the local faith and the community’s reception during his visits to the church housing the remains of Blessed Agostino. Bishop Raimo is scheduled to officially take possession of his new see on October 24 with an installation ceremony at 5:00 PM at the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral in Terni. The event will be attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and San Marino, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra. His transition schedule includes morning prayer at the Basilica of San Valentino, visits to the Terni correctional facility and Santa Maria Hospital, and meetings with civil and military authorities at the Terni City Hall. On Sunday, October 25, Raimo will make a solemn entry into the co-cathedrals of Narni and Amelia, where he will be welcomed in the Piazza dei Priori by local authorities. Regarding his upcoming ministry, Raimo has indicated a strategy centered on listening and direct contact with local communities, with a specific focus on addressing social issues such as the loneliness experienced by young people.
