Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Gabriel Narciso Escobar Ayala as the new auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Asunción in Paraguay. Escobar Ayala, a member of the Salesian congregation, has served as the apostolic vicar of the Paraguayan Chaco since 2013.

This appointment restores the position of auxiliary bishop to the Archdiocese of Asunción for the first time in over two decades. In his new capacity, Escobar Ayala will assist Cardinal Adalberto Martínez Flores in the pastoral care and governance of the archdiocese. The appointment does not include the right of succession to the archiepiscopal see.
