In late July 2026 2026, a technical error at Aquapark Reda in northern Poland caused a technician to add sulfuric acid to a sodium‑hypochlorite tank, releasing chlorine gas. The leak forced the evacuation of more than 400 visitors and staff; one technician was hospitalized, and several aquarium animals, including sharks, died. Mayor Mateusz Richert responded by suspending the city’s cooperation with the privately run park pending a safety audit and expert review. A follow‑up report in early August confirmed that the accident killed 39 fish, among them ten adult black‑tip reef sharks. About 470 visitors were evacuated, but no guests were injured. The park’s water‑treatment system for swimming pools remained unaffected, and Aquapark Reda reopened to the public. Despite the reopening, the municipality continued to hold the partnership on hold while further reviews are conducted. Following technical audits and safety procedure reviews, the facility has introduced new blacktip reef sharks to replace those lost in the incident. These new sharks are currently undergoing an acclimatization period before being released into the main tank to restore the park’s signature marine life attraction. The situation remains under municipal scrutiny, with authorities awaiting detailed technical reports before any future cooperation can be restored.
