Recent archaeological findings in Jerusalem have highlighted significant ancient sites. In the Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem, Israeli Border Police discovered a burial cave beneath a building during a police operation. Experts from the Israel Antiquities Authority tentatively dated the graves to the Second Temple period, noting that additional archaeological remains were found within the cave. Separately, excavations conducted beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre have revealed an ancient funerary landscape. Research published in the journal Liber Annuus by archaeologists from Sapienza University of Rome describes an abandoned quarry, rock-cut tombs, and cultivated plots including olive trees and grapevines dating back approximately 2,000 years. The excavations, which ~~began in~~ spanned from 2022 through 2025 as part of floor restoration work, revealed that the former quarry had been repurposed for farming and burials. Archaeobotanical evidence, including pollen and organic remains, indicates the presence of olive trees and grapevines dating back to approximately 33 A.D. Lead archaeologist Francesca Romana Stasolla noted that the site’s features show striking similarities to New Testament descriptions, specifically the Gospel of John, which mentions a garden and a new tomb near the site of the crucifixion.
