Archaeological discovery of ancient Lutetia in Paris

Overview

Archaeologists in Paris have discovered a 20-meter-long stone and wood wall beneath the Hôtel-Dieu hospital on the Île de la Cité. The find is considered a “major breakthrough” that may resolve long-standing scholarly debates regarding whether the ancient Gallic settlement of Lutetia was located on the island or in the suburb of Nanterre.

Carbon dating of charred remains and artifacts, including a Gallic spearhead, places the construction between 200 B.C. and 10 B.C. The presence of fire damage at the site potentially aligns with historical accounts in “The Gallic Wars” regarding the destruction of the settlement during the Roman conquest.

While the French Ministry of Culture and academic experts, such as Matthieu Poux of the University of Lyon II, suggest the evidence provides “no doubt” regarding the island's role as the ancient city site, officials emphasize that further research is necessary to confirm the exact function and chronology of the structure.
