Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong as the new Archbishop of Puebla. Patrón Wong, who currently serves as the Archbishop of Xalapa, is scheduled to officially assume his new responsibilities on November 19, 2026. This leadership transition follows the resignation of Monsignor Víctor Sánchez Espinosa, who served as Archbishop for 17 years. Sánchez Espinosa resigned due to age requirements under canon law and has been serving as the Apostolic Administrator to oversee the transition. During a mass at the Puebla Cathedral, Sánchez Espinosa expressed confidence that Patrón Wong will continue pastoral work focused on youth, the community, and those living in poverty. During the same service, Sánchez Espinosa also addressed regional violence and the need to preserve cultural heritage following recent vandalism of the San Miguel Arcángel fountain. As Patrón Wong prepares for his move to Puebla, the Archdiocese of Xalapa has not yet announced an official successor. Father Aurelio Mojica Limón, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Veracruz, noted that the selection process rests with the Pope and the Holy See. While it has been suggested that auxiliary bishop José Rafael Palma Capetillo could temporarily assume administrative functions in Xalapa, this has not been confirmed.
