Arena clan Jonny investigation

In late July 2026 Italian Carabinieri executed prison orders for four senior members of the Arena clan in Calabria, requiring them to serve the remaining portions of sentences confirmed by the Court of Cassation. The arrests were part of “Operation Jonny,” a long‑running probe launched in May 2017 by the Direzione Distrettuale Antimafia of Catanzaro under prosecutor Nicola Gratteri. The investigation uncovered a scheme that siphoned more than €36 million from public funds earmarked for the migrant reception centre (CARA) between 2006 and 2015, alongside a mafia‑controlled monopoly over local gambling, extortion of businesses and the use of shell companies for public‑service contracts. The operation initially led to 110 arrests and the seizure of assets exceeding €84 million.

A week later, a 39‑year‑old Arena clan member, identified as L. N., was transferred to a prison in Catanzaro to serve the final year and a month of his sentence. His move was also linked to the ongoing “Jonny” case, which continues to expose the clan’s infiltration of CARA contracts, control of gambling operations, and extortion networks. The transfer underscores that legal proceedings against the clan remain active even after the high‑profile arrests and asset seizures.
