Argentine judicial proceedings regarding the 1994 AMIA terrorist bombing have progressed toward a trial in absentia for several foreign suspects. Initially, Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas included Alí Asghar Hejazi, a former aide to the Iranian Supreme Leader, in the proceedings. Prosecutors alleged Hejazi supervised the operation as part of a secret committee known as ‘Vijeh’ and requested an Interpol red notice due to his status as a fugitive. Subsequently, the court expanded its actions by processing eight Iranian and Lebanese individuals, including former high-ranking Iranian officials and members of Hezbollah. The judge classified the attack as a crime against humanity and imposed a 500 million USD embargo on each accused individual. To address the defendants' absence, the court applied the trial in absentia regime under Law 27.784, a move described by Justice Minister Juan Bautista Mahiques as a “historic milestone” in addressing impunity. In a recent development, Judge Rafecas formally indicted eight individuals—seven Iranians and one Lebanese national—for their roles in the attack that killed 85 people. The judge has now further classified the bombing as genocide. The indictment names several high-ranking officials as indirect authors, including former Iranian Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahijan, former Foreign Minister Ali Velayati, former Revolutionary Guard Commander Mohsen Rezai, and Ahmad Vahidi, the current commander-in-chief of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Other indicted individuals include former Iranian Ambassador Hadi Soleimanpour, cultural counselor Mohsen Rabbani, and intelligence agent Ahmad Asghari. The Lebanese national, Salman Raouf Salman, is accused of coordinating the final stage of the operation. The ruling states the attack was planned in August 1993 by the highest levels of the Iranian regime and executed by Hezbollah using a support network in the Triple Frontier region.
