Argentina mayor term limit debate broadens

In early July 2026 the Chubut provincial legislature lifted two‑term limits for local executives. Shortly thereafter Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof revived a provincial effort, led by Senator Ayelín Durán, to repeal the 2016 mayoral term‑limit law that caps mayors at two consecutive terms. Kicillof argues the restriction limits democratic choice and urges the provincial legislature to allow roughly 80 of the province’s 135 mayors to run again in the 2027 elections. He faces criticism from former governor María Eugenia Vidal and the libertarian La Libertad Avanza party, and links the proposal to a broader “reconstruction” agenda after President Javier Milei.

The discussion has since spread to other provinces. In Mendoza, incumbent mayor Ulpiano Suarez is completing his second term and cannot seek re‑election, prompting debate over potential successors such as former mayor Rodolfo Suarez and former municipal secretary Mariana Juri. In Luján de Cuyo, mayor Esteban Allasin prepares a re‑election bid. Provincially, opponents warn that maintaining term limits would block nearly six‑tenths of municipal mayors, many aligned with the ruling Peronist coalition, from running in 2027. The debate also touches on strategic issues such as separating provincial elections from national ones and the future of primary elections (PASO) ahead of the 2027 national polls.
