Argentina Pachamama Day observances

On August 1, Argentina and neighboring South‑American nations marked Día de la Pachamama, a tradition that honors the Earth as “Mother.” The central ritual involves drinking caña con ruda—sugarcane macerated with rue—believed to bring health, protection and prosperity. Celebrations spread across provinces such as Corrientes, Misiones, Chaco and Formosa and included offerings, smudging, folk dances, murals and school events. Public figures, including Senator Gerardo Zamora and former governor Claudia Ledesma Abdala, participated and shared the ceremony on social media. Health officials warned that the rue infusion lacks scientific support and is not recommended for children, pregnant women or the elderly.

A week later, indigenous leader Lorena Monroy used the Pachamama Day platform in Catamarca Province to call for street protests defending soil, water and sovereignty. She warned that foreign extraction projects, land grabbing and water privatization threaten ancestral lands and cultural identity. The protest, organized by Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir, linked environmental protection with human‑rights advocacy, highlighting broader indigenous resistance to land commodification and extractive violence.
