The Argentine Ministry of Health has restructured the Remediar program, a national initiative for free medication distribution. Through Resolution 1477/2026, the government reduced the list of essential medicines from 128 to just six active principles: acetylsalicylic acid, atorvastatin, candesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, ramipril, and rosuvastatin. This policy shift prioritizes the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which the Ministry noted accounted for 27.9% of deaths in 2024. Consequently, many common treatments for diabetes, thyroid issues, infections, and respiratory ailments—including metformin, levothyroxine, salbutamol, and amoxicillin—are no longer covered by the national scheme. The responsibility for financing and providing these excluded medicines has shifted to individual provinces. In response to the shift, the province of Misiones announced it will allocate 1.2 billion pesos monthly to maintain essential supplies. However, health officials in Buenos Aires and various legislators have criticized the move, describing it as a severe budget cut that threatens healthcare access for vulnerable populations. The provinces of Córdoba and various municipalities in Buenos Aires have also expressed concern, warning that the reduction will overburden primary care centers and regional hospitals. To complement these changes, Health Minister Mario Lugones announced the National Vascular Health Plan 2026-2030, aimed at reducing premature deaths related to strokes and heart attacks. Additionally, acute myocardial infarction has been added to the list of mandatory notification events to improve resource allocation and data collection.
