Building on these developments, Argentine lawmakers are proposing to toughen the Penal Code to increase penalties for drivers who cause deaths through negligence or imprudence. Proposed reforms include Proposals from Mendoza Security Minister Mercedes Rus, Deputy Pamela Verasay, and Lisandro Nieri suggest prison sentences ranging from 3 to 10 years, with harsher years. These initiatives aim to establish driving under the influence as a specific criminal offense rather than an administrative violation. Harsher penalties and driving bans are proposed for drivers those who flee the scene, fail to assist victims, drive under the influence, or significantly exceed speed limits. Senator Anabel Fernández Sagasti has also noted that her own project to aggravate penalties for road crimes has received partial Senate approval and is awaiting treatment in the Chamber of Deputies.
