Argentine university authorities, faculty, and staff have initiated protests against the government’s failure to implement the National University Financing Law (Law 27.795). Representatives from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) have called for immediate resources to support science, technology, and university hospitals to prevent the paralysis of public health centers. While the Executive branch has been accused of ignoring judicial rulings regarding salary updates, government representatives noted that collective bargaining sessions are scheduled for September 1. Additionally, President Javier Milei and Chief of Staff Diego Santilli have faced criminal complaints for breach of official duties related to the funding impasse. Escalating the conflict, the Confederación Nacional de Docentes Universitarios (CONADU) and other sector unions have confirmed a 48-hour national strike for August 27 and 28. Union leaders state the budget shortage affects building maintenance, faculty salaries, and student scholarships, while also seeking the restoration of the National Teacher Incentive Fund (FONID). Educators claim they have lost approximately one-third of their purchasing power since late 2023. In response, the Ministry of Human Capital stated it is complying with the collective bargaining agreement signed on June 10, reporting that transfers have been made for university hospital expenses and personnel costs, including the first installment of the 2026 annual supplementary salary.
