Argentine university authorities, faculty, and staff have initiated protests against the government’s failure to implement the National University Financing Law (Law 27.795). Demonstrators, including the Argentine Federation of National University Workers (FATUN), have held rallies at various institutions to demand salary updates, scholarship recompositions, and funding for operating expenses. Following failed judicial mediation led by Federal Judge Martín Cormick, representatives from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) have called for immediate resources to prevent the paralysis of public health centers and research facilities. Escalating the conflict, the Confederación Nacional de Docentes Universitarios (CONADU) and other sector unions have confirmed strikes to protest budget shortages. On September 2, professors launched a 24-hour national strike after rejecting a 3% salary increase proposal. On September 6, the Frente Sindical de las Universidades Nacionales announced a new 24-hour general strike for Tuesday, September 8, involving both teaching and non-teaching staff. This follows the rejection of a proposal from the Ministry of Human Capital offering a 6% increase for September and October. Labor unions, including CONADU, FEDUN, and FATUN, have dismissed this offer as insufficient to offset inflation, instead demanding a 31.2% increase plus the August inflation rate. In addition to salary demands, unions are seeking updates to student scholarships, such as Córdoba, the Progresar and Manuel Belgrano programs, and conflict has expanded to include the full application of Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC). Organized by the University Financing Law, which they claim has remained unapplied for over 300 days. The university community has also planned public classes union ADIUC, faculty and non-teaching staff have scheduled strikes for Friday, September 15 18, and a V Federal University March for Tuesday, September 22, following the first week rejection of October. Meanwhile, the CIN has approved a 2027 budget project requesting 11 trillion pesos to sustain 3% salary increase proposal. These actions have impacted the higher education system. Hospital Nacional de Clínicas and the Hospital Universitario de Maternidad y Neonatología, which are operating with minimum staff to handle only urgent and emergency cases while suspending scheduled appointments.
