Arizona border wall construction protests

Overview

Conflict has emerged along the Arizona-Mexico border regarding the construction of a double border wall. On October 5, U.S. Border Patrol agents and contractors demolished a historic Cottonwood tree known as ‘La Abuela’ near Lochiel, Arizona, to facilitate infrastructure expansion. The removal of the tree, which was estimated to be between 150 and 250 years old, followed a 70-day protest camp maintained by environmental activists. The Tohono O'odham Nation criticized the action, while the U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that pre-construction surveys found no active migratory bird nests.

Following the tree's removal, the protest movement expanded into the ‘Lochiel Autonomous Zone,’ a large-scale encampment housing approximately 100 people. This occupation, which included anarchist organizations and raised nearly $75,000, obstructed wall construction for several weeks. Federal agents eventually moved to dismantle the encampment, resulting in at least eight arrests and reports of harassment against journalists. With the dismantling of the zone, construction of the border wall is expected to resume.
