On September 11, 2026, Yanet Dowden, a 22-year-old Level II correctional officer with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry, was arrested in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, Mexico. Mexican security forces, including the Navy and National Guard, intercepted Dowden near the border bridge. Authorities seized an AK-47 and 5,445 rounds of ammunition hidden in her Jeep. Mexican officials identified Dowden as a logistics operator for ‘Los Mayos’ (also referred to as ‘La Mayiza’), a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by Ismael ‘Mayito Flaco’ Zambada Zicairos. The seizure was estimated to have caused a financial blow of approximately 1.65 million pesos to the cartel’s operations. By September 19, a federal judge ordered pretrial detention for Dowden, an American citizen, for the illegal smuggling of the 5,445 military-grade cartridges. Following the arrest, Arizona authorities confirmed Dowden’s identity and employment. The Arizona Department of Corrections has placed her on administrative leave and initiated formal dismissal proceedings in accordance with the state’s Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights. The department stated it is conducting an exhaustive review and will cooperate with ongoing investigations.
