Armenia and Azerbaijan have begun exploring potential electricity trade and power grid interconnection. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed openness to such trade to meet growing energy demands, including those from the artificial intelligence sector, while emphasizing a commitment to energy independence through solar power and storage. Following previous proposals from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to supply electricity once Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant ceases operations, energy officials from both nations met in Lachin. This meeting involved technical representatives from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and Azerenerji, as well as officials from Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure and the Armenian Electricity System Operator. The discussions transitioned from political statements to technical and commercial assessments regarding mutual electricity imports and exports. During these talks, President Aliyev noted that a project to transmit electricity from Azerbaijan through Armenia to Nakhchivan is ready and could be completed within six months. However, no formal agreements have been reached concerning the specific capacity, financing, implementation timeline, or infrastructure routes.
