Armenian legal proceedings over 2008 unrest
Overview
Legal proceedings are advancing in Armenia regarding the violent unrest that occurred on March 1-2, 2008, following a disputed presidential election. The clashes resulted in ten deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Former President Robert Kocharyan, who was arrested in late August 2026, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan for a hearing. He remains in custody under a two-month detention order. During the proceedings, the court rejected a motion to terminate the criminal prosecution of former Vice Prime Minister Armen Gevorkyan.
In a separate development, the prosecution has sent the case of former police commander Grigor Grigoryan to court. Grigoryan is charged with negligence regarding the use of weaponry and special measures. Prosecutors allege that Grigoryan and his subordinates ordered the use of improper and expired tear gas canisters in enclosed spaces, which contributed to the deaths of three protesters and caused various injuries.
