Armenian parliamentary political instability
Overview
Tensions within the Armenian Parliament have manifested through both procedural walkouts and physical altercations.
In late September, ruling party members from the Civil Contract party walked out of a parliamentary hearing focused on the socio-economic and legal challenges facing displaced Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. The walkout occurred after participants were introduced using former titles from the Artsakh parliament, which government officials characterized as an attempt to recognize a ‘second state’ within Armenia.
By early October, parliamentary proceedings were disrupted by two separate physical altercations. The first involved a scuffle between ruling party and opposition lawmakers following allegations of embezzlement regarding parliamentary bonuses. A second confrontation arose during discussions concerning a commission to investigate a crisis involving the Armenian Apostolic Church, triggered by verbal disputes and accusations regarding the Catholicos’s political ties.
