Armenia is navigating a period of significant political and social instability. Initial concerns centered on a broad political agenda involving constitutional reforms, the potential withdrawal of the Russian 102nd military base, and disputes regarding the Armenian Apostolic Church. Concurrently, public health and environmental issues emerged in Yerevan, specifically regarding the safety of the municipal water supply and the ecological impact of redeveloping Aghi Lake. As tensions evolved, the focus expanded to include disputes over cultural heritage and civil liberties. Political criticism was directed at the arrest of Vahram Sahakyan, which some officials argued undermined sovereignty and freedom of speech. Additionally, disputes intensified regarding the historical identity of Artsakh, as analysts contested Azerbaijani claims that certain Armenian cultural artifacts, such as the tombstone of Nerses Hasan Jalalyan at Gandzasar monastery, are of Caucasian Albanian origin. Recent developments have seen intensified conflict regarding the relationship between the state and religious institutions. The Hayaqve national civic unit has appealed to the World Council of Churches (WCC) following a September 24 government report concerning the Armenian Apostolic Church. Hayaqve characterized the report as “unconstitutional, illegal, and improper,” alleging it represents an attempt by authorities to interfere in the Church’s internal affairs. The group has called on the WCC to monitor religious freedom in Armenia and to encourage the state to respect the Church’s autonomy and maintain restraint in public discourse.
