Sentencing in Lofoten Islands arson trial

Two German men were indicted for a series of six arson attacks in the village of Laukvik on Norway’s Lofoten Islands that occurred during an eight-day period in July 2025. The incidents caused significant damage, including the total destruction of a cemetery mortuary chapel and the loss of approximately 12 tons of dried cod heads at Saga Fisk, with damages estimated at 1.07 million NOK.

During their trial at the Salten and Lofoten District Court in Svolvær, both men admitted to being responsible for the fires. One defendant faced a serious charge under the ‘murder-fire paragraph’ regarding a blaze at the Polarlyssenteret. The prosecution alleged the fire, which started in a woodshed near a residence occupied by two people, could have resulted in loss of life. While the defendant admitted to setting the fire, he denied the most serious charge, claiming he attempted to extinguish the flames after hearing voices and had no intention of endangering lives.

The court ultimately sentenced the primary defendant to two years and eight months in prison, while the second man received an eight-month sentence. They were also ordered to pay a combined 125,000 NOK in damages. Evidence presented included photos and videos from the defendants' mobile phones, including footage where they were heard laughing while discussing the possibility of a gas canister, placed inside the chapel, exploding. The court characterized the chapel incident as gross vandalism due to its religious significance. The men were apprehended after local residents tracked and surrounded them prior to police arrival.
