Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, has announced his return from retirement to lead Flop Labs, a startup focused on developing a cryptocurrency named FLOP. The project is designed as a “proof-of-useful-inference protocol” intended to facilitate an economy where autonomous AI agents use the token to pay for computing power and memory.

Hayes has committed to a 100% fair launch with no presales or venture capital involvement. He has issued repeated warnings regarding fake Flop Labs tokens, clarifying that the project has not yet issued any tokens or launched a memecoin. The roadmap indicates a large-scale airdrop is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, with the network's genesis block expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027. Participation in the future airdrop may involve requirements such as a unique Decentralized Identifier (DID).

In August 2026, Hayes’s activities drew scrutiny from on-chain investigators. Reports highlighted instances where his family office, Maelstrom, moved significant token amounts following his public endorsements, noting a history of volatile trading patterns. During this same period, Hayes re-entered a position in Ether.fi (ETHFI), purchasing 1.9 million tokens valued at approximately $1.17 million.
