Artistic initiatives in Mexico are increasingly being used to address the crisis of forced disappearances and honor the memory of victims. In Tijuana, artist Enrique Chiu, supported by Amnesty International Mexico, created a mural titled ‘Buscar sin miedo’ (Search without fear) on the border wall. The artwork serves as a tribute to women activists and families searching for the more than 134,000 disappeared persons in Mexico, aiming to provide international visibility to the crisis. Further artistic efforts have emerged in Guanajuato and other regions through multidisciplinary media. These include Fabiola Rayas Chávez’s exhibition ‘Caminar el cuerpo desaparecido’ in Silao, which uses textiles and writing to highlight search efforts, and Alexia Zúñiga’s ‘Tierra Caliente’ project, which uses documentary and testimonial elements to process grief following the disappearance of her brother. ~~These projects coincide with~~ To mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, ~~acting as forms~~ families also participated in the exhibition ‘Grabados contra el olvido’ (Engravings against Oblivion) in Mexico City. Coordinated by visual artist Alfredo López Casanova with support from the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the event featured engravings created by search collectives from Guadalajara, Monterrey, Guerrero, and Mexico City. Participants used the medium to recreate the facial features and gestures of ~~resistance~~ their relatives, utilizing art as an exercise in collective memory and ~~memory.~~ a demand for justice regarding the more than 135,000 missing persons in the country.
