Arunachal Pradesh renewable energy and infrastructure growth

Overview

Arunachal Pradesh is expanding its renewable energy capacity and infrastructure to support remote and strategic border regions.

Initial efforts have focused on investigating geothermal energy potential in the Tawang district, specifically within the Mago-Thingbu belt. Scientific studies, involving collaborations with international institutes, are assessing sites such as Mago, Thingbu, Damteng, and Tsechu for electricity generation and other applications.

Parallel to geothermal exploration, the state is significantly advancing its hydropower sector. The commissioning of four units of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has been accompanied by cabinet approval for over ₹52,000 crore to fund five additional hydroelectric projects, aiming to generate approximately 4,000 MW.

These energy developments are being integrated with broader infrastructure improvements, including airport expansions, tunnel construction, and the Vibrant Villages Program, which allocates ₹2,205 crore for road connectivity across 126 border villages.
