Commemorative activities are being held in Greece to honor the heritage and history of Asia Minor refugees. In Nea Ionia, the 10th annual road race, ‘In the Neighborhoods of the Asia Minor Refugees,’ was scheduled to take place to recognize those who settled in Nea Ionia, Nea Filadelfeia, and Nea Chalkidona following the Asia Minor Catastrophe. In Volos, celebrations are marking the centenary of the founding of the Evangelistria Neas Ionias refugee parish. These events include religious services featuring the Holy Relics of Saint Photini of Samaria and a major exhibition at the Volos City Museum titled ‘Evangelistria Neas Ionias Volos: A Century of History, Faith, and Contribution,’ which documents the community’s evolution through archival and photographic materials. The centenary celebrations concluded on September 29 with a major commemorative concert titled ‘The Presence of Memory.’ Organized by the Municipality of Volos and the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias and Almou, the concert celebrated 100 years of the parish and 30 years of the Estoudiantina of Nea Ionia Magnesia orchestra. Musical performances focused on Greek traditions, specifically Smyrna and the history of the Asia Minor catastrophe. The event featured the Estoudiantina orchestra, directed by Andreas Katsigiannis, alongside singers Dimitris Basis, Christina Maxouri, and Christos Kaliontzidis, and the choir of the Volos Municipal Conservatory. Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias attended the event to honor the refugee ancestors who established the original Evangelistria.
