Asia-Pacific economic growth outlook
Overview
Economic growth forecasts for the Asia-Pacific and ASEAN+3 regions continue to be revised upward, primarily fueled by global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technology and high-tech exports. The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) has raised its 2026 regional growth projection to 4.9%, noting that increased capital expenditure from major US technology companies is stimulating demand for data centers, networking, and electronic products. This trend is expected to help offset rising production and logistics costs. AMRO projects headline inflation at 1.6% in 2026 and 1.7% in 2027, though risks such as the El Niño phenomenon and rising energy costs persist.
The World Bank has raised its 2026 growth forecast for the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region to 4.5%. In nations including Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam, AI-related products accounted for more than 70% of total export growth. Viet Nam saw a significant upward revision, with its growth forecast reaching 7.4%. Specifically, the World Bank has increased its 2026 economic growth projection for Indonesia to 5.2%, up from the 4.7% estimated in April 2026. This revision exceeds the projected 4.5% growth for the broader EAP region and is attributed to strong domestic consumption and a smaller-than-expected impact from rising energy prices.
While the AI-driven export boom supports these projections, the World Bank warned that heavy reliance on the AI investment cycle creates vulnerability to potential shifts in global technology spending. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) noted that the global economy is facing dual pressures: a positive demand shock from the AI boom and a negative energy supply shock. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva further warned that global public debt is on track to exceed 100% of global GDP, presenting significant fiscal challenges.
