Asian LNG shipping sector expansion and restructuring

Overview

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping sector in Asia is undergoing expansion and structural reorganization. In China, CNOOC Group has introduced the “GREENERGY RIVER,” a new dual-fuel LNG carrier built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding as part of a six-ship series for a joint venture involving NYK, CNOOC Gas and Power Singapore Trading & Marketing, CETS Investment Management, and China Merchants Energy Shipping.

In South Korea, a major fleet restructuring is underway involving SK Shipping and H-Line Shipping, both owned by private equity firm Hahn & Co. The companies have agreed to an asset swap where SK Shipping will acquire 16 LNG vessels and associated long-term contracts from H-Line. In return, SK Shipping will provide 12 tankers, their contracts, and approximately $300 million in cash.

This deal is intended to create specialized maritime entities. SK Shipping plans to rebrand as K-LNG, which would operate 32 LNG carriers and 14 liquefied petroleum gas vessels, positioning it as the largest LNG carrier operator in Asia and the third-largest globally. H-Line Shipping will pivot its focus toward tanker, dry bulk, and vehicle carrier operations.
