The border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has seen periods of both diplomatic resolution and violent escalation. In late July, Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung reported that five district border disputes with Assam had been settled following the Namsai Declaration. While regional committees continued working to resolve remaining sectors, a recent incident in the Tarasso area of Papum Pare involved arson and an exchange of fire between local residents and Assam forest personnel, though no injuries were reported at that time. By August, tensions escalated into significant violence in the Dhemaji district. A confrontation regarding alleged land encroachment at Mingmang Basti resulted in unidentified individuals opening fire, leaving between 9 and 18 people injured, with several in critical condition. Tribal leaders have characterized the use of firearms in this long-standing boundary dispute as an “unprecedented and dangerous escalation.” In response to the firing, the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) and the Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organisations of Assam (CCTOA) called for a 12-hour bandh and economic blockades to demand justice. By August 13, the situation intensified following stone-pelting and police firing near the Likabali entry point, where police reportedly fired rounds in the air to disperse crowds. The ongoing economic blockade initiated by the TMPK has disrupted vehicle movement between the states, though emergency and school transportation remains permitted. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu have both called for peace. Sarma noted that 52 villages remain under dispute, while Khandu stated that officials are engaging with student and welfare societies to restore normalcy. Addressing the dispute on August 13, Sarma emphasized that the relationship between the states “transcends their interstate borders,” citing deep cultural and familial ties.
