Assassination of Susy Aponte Polo in Peru

Overview

Susy Isabel Aponte Polo, a journalist and regional governor candidate for the Socios por Áncash movement, was assassinated by gunfire during a campaign event at a market in Caraz, Peru. The attack resulted in Aponte being shot in the head and left five other people wounded.

The Peruvian Public Ministry is investigating the killing under hypotheses of contract crime and femicide. Authorities have detained three individuals: a suspected shooter (identified as a Venezuelan national), a suspected financier, and a person accused of providing transportation. A firearm was seized during the arrests.

Prior to the assassination, Aponte had publicly reported receiving death threats from inmates in three different prisons. She had also accused General Víctor Revoredo Farfán, the director of Criminal Investigation for the National Police, of ordering an attempt on her life due to her investigations into corruption. Following her allegations of links between police leadership and the criminal organization ‘Los Pulpos’, the general and other high-ranking officials were reassigned.
