Two separate incidents of violence involving individuals named Rocha have been reported in Brazil. In Belém, former senator and Sudam superintendent Paulo Rocha was detained following allegations of assaulting women during a wedding celebration. Rocha issued a public apology, calling the event a “sad episode,” though he denied direct assault. In Santos, environmental engineer Marcelo de Oliveira Rocha has died following a violent assault during a political event supporting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Rocha, a 30-year-old master’s student at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), disappeared around 3:00 AM on October 24 after an event featuring Banda Esquerdantina. He was found unconscious near the intersection of Avenida Conselheiro Nébias and Rua Henrique Ablas. Surveillance footage shows at least seven men surrounding and beating the victim with punches and kicks before stealing his belongings, including a cellphone. Some of the assault was reportedly broadcast live on TikTok by the perpetrators. After receiving treatment from SAMU and being transferred to Hospital São Paulo, brain death was confirmed by his family and the university on Monday, October 26. While authorities initially registered the case as robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, investigators are now treating the case as latrocínio (robbery followed by death). The Civil Police are reviewing security footage, social media videos, and witness testimonies to identify the suspects. While the official investigation focuses on robbery, the victim's family, members of Banda Esquerdantina, and social media reports have raised suspicions that the attack may have been motivated by political intolerance and homophobia. As of October 27, the Civil Police have identified several suspects. Two adolescents and one individual identified as a boxer have been taken into custody in connection with the investigation.
