Assault investigation of Italian student in Barcelona

Overview

Spanish authorities have made progress in the investigation regarding the August 12 assault of Nicola Maggiotto, a 21-year-old Italian student, near a club in Barcelona’s Port Forum area.

Barcelona police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, detained four Spanish nationals in connection with the incident. While the suspects exercised their right to remain silent, investigators seized their mobile phones and requested genetic material to compare against biological traces found on the victim’s clothing.

Authorities have identified six of the eight suspected attackers, two of whom are minors. Maggiotto, who suffered extremely serious injuries and spent nearly a month in a medically induced coma, returned to Italy on September 8. Police continue to search for two remaining unidentified suspects.
