Assault of medical professionals in Maharashtra
Overview
In July 2026, an incident occurred at Shastri Nagar Municipal Hospital in Dombivli, Maharashtra, where three doctors were allegedly verbally abused and physically assaulted. The confrontation reportedly began when relatives of a pregnant patient accused hospital staff of delaying treatment.
Following an appeal by the Maharashtra government, the Supreme Court of India stayed bail previously granted to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and others by the Bombay High Court. The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, emphasized that “the medical fraternity cannot be touched” and that physical violence is not an acceptable way to express dissatisfaction with medical outcomes. The court also noted that lower courts had failed to account for Mhatre’s criminal history, which includes 18 cases involving serious offenses.
Following the court order, Ramesh Mhatre, Ramesh Pawar, Pramod Nikam, and Akshay Sharad Karande surrendered to a trial court in Thane district and were remanded to judicial custody at Adharwadi Jail in Kalyan.
