On August 12, 2026, a 21-year-old ~~Italian tourist,~~ Nicola Maggiotto, a student from Asolo, Italy, was placed in a medically induced coma following a violent assault in the Port Fòrum area of Sant Adrià de Besòs, near Barcelona. Witnesses reported that as Maggiotto and a group of eight companions exited the Sea Sea Beach club, they were approached by approximately twelve Spanish-speaking youths. During the confrontation, Maggiotto was struck in the back of the head, resulting in serious brain injuries. While another member of the group sustained facial injuries, authorities stated the attack did not appear to be a robbery as no belongings were stolen. As of August 18, Maggiotto remains in a coma at Hospital del Mar. Medical reports indicate he has suffered significant cerebral hematomas, including a coup-contrecoup injury, which may have resulted from the initial blow or from hitting the ground. While his intracranial pressure is reported as stable and the immediate risk of death has passed the acute phase, his neurological prognosis remains uncertain.
