Assumption Day holiday status in Bavaria

Overview

Assumption Day, observed on August 15, 2026, serves as a statutory public holiday in specific German regions where the Catholic population is predominant. In Bavaria, the holiday applies to approximately 1,708 municipalities, primarily located in Swabia, the Upper Palatinate, Lower Franconia, and parts of Upper and Middle Franconia, while 348 municipalities do not observe it.

The designation of holiday status is determined by the ratio of Catholic to Protestant residents based on recent census data. Following the implementation of the 2022 census as the new basis for these determinations, six Bavarian municipalities gained holiday status and two lost it.

Because the holiday falls on a Saturday in 2026, it does not provide an additional weekday off for employees. In municipalities where the holiday is not observed, such as parts of Upper and Middle Franconia, retailers may see increased activity as shops remain open for regular business on this primary sales day.
