Athens is implementing new infrastructure and digital solutions to address urban parking shortages and traffic congestion. Initial efforts focused on physical expansion through large-scale underground parking projects. In Palaio Faliro, a new facility at Flisvos Park is being developed to provide 400 spaces, including 21 for people with disabilities and 80 electric vehicle charging stations. Similarly, a €17.6 million project in Nea Ionia is underway to create 310 parking spaces near the Nea Ionia metro station. Following these infrastructure developments, the Municipality of Athens and DAEM A.E. launched ‘AthensWay’, a digital mobility application. Replacing the former myAthensPass, the app integrates parking services and transportation tools, allowing users to manage controlled parking, process payments via e-wallets, and receive expiration notifications. As of late September 2026, the application provides expanded functionality, including real-time occupancy updates for municipal underground parking at Kozia Square, as well as information on bus services and electric vehicle charging stations. Expanding its digital mobility ecosystem, the Municipality of Athens and DAEM S.A. launched ‘AthensCharge’ on October 1. This new digital platform and mobile application for electric vehicle (EV) charging management makes the Municipality the first local government entity in Greece to directly manage its own EV charging network. The platform enables drivers to locate available chargers via a map, initiate and monitor sessions, and complete electronic payments. DAEM S.A. will manage real-time monitoring and session data to inform future electromobility policies. The service cost is set at 0.37 euros per kWh, with 24/7 technical support available through the Athens Citizens Service Line. This launch marks marking the end of free charging within the municipality. The network initially includes 19 public charging stations, originally donated by Metlen Energy & Metals in 2020, with plans to expand On October 12, 2026, the ‘ATHENS MOVE’ initiative was introduced to other further enhance urban mobility. Supported by the Social Climate Fund, this plan includes the introduction of four new municipal areas. lines, 17 electric buses, and an allocation of 11.75 million euros to improve neighborhood connectivity. This is part of a broader 1.46 billion euro transportation investment program aimed at reducing travel costs and barriers for vulnerable households and small businesses.
