The presence of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the North Sea has been confirmed by the landing of a 338 kg specimen at the Whitby fishing port in North Yorkshire by the vessel ‘Dominator’, followed by another catch exceeding 300 kg the next day. This marks a significant northward expansion of the species, which had largely disappeared from the region in the 1960s following the collapse of herring stocks. Researchers, including Professor Lucy Hawkes from the University of Exeter, suggest the return of these apex predators indicates improved ecosystem health. Hawkes noted that previous excessive catches of juvenile tuna had historically prevented the population from reproducing effectively. To manage the recovering population, scientists and the fishing industry are collaborating through the Thunnus UK international research project, utilizing tagging and fisherman observations to better understand tuna ecology. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has described the recovery as ‘one of the most exciting developments in our fisheries for decades’. In response to the thriving populations, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has approved the highest number of permits and catch quotas ever granted for the species. Recent observations confirm the Eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna has returned to the waters off Scarborough, Yorkshire, after a 60-year absence. This comeback follows a period of decline driven by the depletion of herring stocks, the impact of the Second World War on fishing infrastructure, and global demand for sushi and sashimi. The region holds historical significance for the species; during the 1930s, the Scarborough Tunny Club was a prestigious destination for high-profile figures, including John Wayne and Errol Flynn.
