Atlantic Forest illegal deforestation enforcement
Overview
The ‘Mata Atlântica em Pé’ environmental enforcement operation has expanded its scope from regional inspections to a large-scale multi-state initiative targeting illegal deforestation in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest biome. Initial phases of the operation focused on specific states, such as Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, where authorities used geospatial intelligence and satellite monitoring to identify hundreds of hectares of illegal clearing. These efforts resulted in various infraction notices, embargoes, and millions of Reais in fines. Following a ten-day inspection period, the task force—coordinated by Abrampa and the Ministério Público de Minas Gerais, with support from the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation—reported documenting over 8,300 hectares of illegal deforestation across 17 states. Utilizing satellite monitoring and geospatial intelligence, the initiative identified over 1,500 deforestation alerts. In the state of Paraíba, the operation identified more than 230 hectares of illegal clearing across the municipalities of São Miguel de Taipu, Massaranduba, Alagoa Grande, and Alagoinha, resulting in 15 notices of violation and approximately R$ 2 million in fines. Nationally, the operation has issued roughly R$ 100 million in fines. The ninth edition of the operation has now concluded, confirming approximately R$ 100 million in fines across 8,370 hectares of inspected land. In Paraná, authorities inspected 2,000 hectares, issuing 445 environmental infraction notices totaling R$ 14.2 million in fines through a collaboration involving the Institute of Water and Land (IAT), the Environmental Police Force Green Battalion, and Ibama. In Rio de Janeiro, the state conducted its largest mobilization to date, responding to 168 alerts across 64 municipalities in August. This resulted in 225 administrative measures and over R$ 800,000 in fines, representing a significant increase in activity compared to the previous year.
