Atlético de Madrid continued their strong LaLiga form with a series of significant victories. Following a 4-0 rout of CA Osasuna, which moved the club to third place with 13 points, the team faced Real Madrid in the highly anticipated Madrid derby on September 20. In the derby held at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Atlético secured a 2-1 victory. The match was marked by high tension, including 24 fouls. A VAR review resulted in a red card for Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen in the 49th minute for a foul in the penalty area. Capitalizing on the man advantage, Alejandro Grimaldo converted the penalty in the 53rd minute to provide the opening goal. Jonathan David extended the lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute. Although Antonio Rüdiger scored for Real Madrid in the 89th minute, Atlético held on to win. This result leaves Real Madrid six points behind league leaders FC Barcelona. The match has sparked intense controversy regarding officiating. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho heavily criticized referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias, presenting printed images during his press conference to argue that several incidents involving Christian Romero and Kang-in Lee should have resulted in red cards. The club also issued a public statement condemning the officiating, while Real Madrid TV broadcasted highly critical coverage of the match's decisions. Following these developments, Atlético Madrid moved up to second place in the league with 16 points. The club is scheduled to travel to Mendizorroza for an eighth-round fixture against sixth-placed Deportivo Alavés. Ahead of the match, reports regarding the starting lineup remain conflicting; while some suggest Julián Álvarez may start after recovering from a muscle injury, others indicate he may begin on the bench to manage his workload. Atlético expects the return of Pablo Barrios and Alejandro Grimaldo for the encounter.
