Atlético Madrid and Manchester United met at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, for a second-round UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture. The match marked the resumption of European club football following the international break. Prior to the match, Atlético Madrid, managed by Diego Simeone, sought their first points of the tournament after a 2-1 loss to Liverpool. The Spanish side entered with a full squad, including Julián Álvarez and Cuti Romero, and had shown strong domestic form with four consecutive wins. Simeone had expressed confidence in his squad, specifically highlighting the potential of Álvarez to find his scoring rhythm. Manchester United, led by Michael Carrick, arrived with high European morale following a 4-0 win over Sabah FK, but faced significant selection challenges. The English side was dealing with a depleted roster due to injuries to players such as Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Benjamin Sesko, and Matthijs de Ligt, as well as the absences of Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu. Additionally, the club had been struggling domestically, recording their worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years. Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the contest, with goals scored by Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman. The match saw an early goal from Barrios in the first minute following a sequence involving Kang in Lee and Álex Baena. Manchester United’s difficulties were compounded by a red card for defender Leny Yoro, who was dismissed for a foul on Jonathan David. The defeat has increased pressure on Michael Carrick, with reports suggesting Antonio Conte as a potential candidate to replace him if results do not improve.
