Flood protection efforts in the Attica region have progressed from the completion of specific infrastructure projects to the implementation of a large-scale regional strategy. In early October, the AKTOR Group completed a €10.3 million project in the Thriasio Plain. This work focused on the Agios Georgios torrent, involving the stabilization of the torrent bed and the installation of reinforced concrete structures and weirs to manage water discharge and prevent erosion. By mid-October, the Attica Region expanded its focus to a broader €250 million flood protection plan. This initiative encompasses approximately 30 projects intended to protect the Attica basin from climate change-induced rainfall. Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias has emphasized the need for coordinated metropolitan governance between the state, the region, and municipalities. As of the latest reports, mid-October, seven projects totaling €28.87 million have already signed contracts, with additional work on storm drain networks in areas such as Kritika Galatsi and Ippokratous Street expected to follow. Despite these advancements, geological expert Michalis Diakakis has raised concerns regarding the region’s vulnerability. He notes that while projects are underway, the existing infrastructure is a mix of old and new interventions that may not be sufficient during extreme weather events. Diakakis further highlights that the high concentration of impermeable surfaces within the densely built urban fabric complicates water absorption and safe runoff.
