Overview

Following the February 2021 military coup in Myanmar, former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has remained under house arrest. After more than five years of incommunicado detention, she recently engaged in a 20-minute phone conversation with her son, Kim Aris. The call, permitted by the military government, took place between the Myanmar embassy in London and Naypyitaw.

Aris reported that his mother sounded “strong” despite her 18-year sentence, though he noted her voice was slightly croaky. He expressed concern regarding her health, specifically mentioning she reported significant pain in her right hand. While military doctors perform periodic health checks, Aris has expressed skepticism regarding the reliability of those assessments.

Aris has cautioned that this contact does not signify a fundamental change in her status, emphasizing that a single conversation does not equate to regular family access or political freedom. He continues to demand the unconditional release of his 81-year-old mother and all political prisoners, alongside guaranteed private family contact and independent medical access.
