The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party has intensified its criticism of Romania’s political and economic stability, citing a political vacuum, energy crisis, and high inflation. AUR leader George Simion has proposed reducing the number of parliamentarians to 300 for the 2028 elections, a project the Chamber of Deputies has moved toward analysis via a dedicated working group. Recent legislative efforts include AUR’s proposal to mandate patriotism by fining officials who refuse to kiss the national flag during ceremonies and penalizing media outlets that provide insufficient coverage for National Flag Day. Additionally, a coalition of the PNL, USR, and AUR parliamentary groups has called for the end of online voting in Parliament, advocating for a return to mandatory physical presence for all legislative sessions. On September 10, AUR expanded its legislative reach by submitting a proposal to limit the mandates of leaders within various intelligence services and autonomous agencies. The bill targets the directors of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), and the Special Telecommunications Service (STS), proposing five-year terms with a maximum of two mandates per person. Under this proposal, even a partial mandate would count as a full term to prevent bypassing limits. Senator Nicolae Vlahu, a project initiator, stated these limits aim to prevent the “excessive concentration of power and the formation of influence circles” within security structures. The proposal also covers the leadership of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), the National Audiovisual Council (CNA), and the National Council for Combating Discrimination. Critics argue these interventions could undermine the stability and independence of autonomous authorities. Polling by INSCOP Research shows AUR leading parliamentary election intentions at approximately 39.7%, significantly ahead of the PSD (18.7%) and PNL (16.3%). Among respondents who state they will definitely vote, AUR support rises to 40.2%.
