Australia Ag2050 farming roadmap

In late July 2026, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Australian Farm Institute released a discussion paper, Ag2050 next steps – scenarios to decisions. The paper presented four evidence‑based scenarios for Australian agriculture—Regional Ag capitals, Landscape stewardship, Climate survival, and System decline—and highlighted near‑term choices that will shape productivity, profitability and sustainability through 2050.

A few days later, CSIRO used the Boorowa Agricultural Research Station’s open‑day event to showcase field trials on crop productivity, livestock management, soil health and environmental impact. Station manager Gerard Ryan and CSIRO Agriculture and Food Deputy Director Dr Alison Bentley emphasized the importance of linking scientific research with regional communities. The event also reinforced the Ag2050 paper’s scenarios, with program lead Dr Rose Roche and Australian Farm Institute executive director Katie McRobert reiterating that today’s strategic decisions will determine the sector’s future.

Together, the release of the paper and the subsequent community‑focused open day illustrate CSIRO’s coordinated effort to inform and engage Australian farmers and stakeholders around the Ag2050 roadmap.
