Australia energy production and fuel security

Overview

Australia’s energy sector is characterized by significant export earnings and a heavy reliance on fossil fuels. In the 2023-24 period, energy resources generated $180 billion in export earnings, accounting for approximately 27 per cent of the nation’s total export earnings. The country maintains major global roles as the second-largest coal exporter, the third-largest liquefied natural gas exporter, and the fourth-largest uranium producer.

To address vulnerabilities related to these energy dynamics, the Australian Federal Government has introduced a $14.8 billion Fuel Security and Resilience Package. This initiative includes a $3.2 billion investment to establish the Australian Fuel Security Reserve, targeting a strategic reserve of one billion litres of diesel and jet fuel. The government also plans to increase mandatory industry fuel stockholding requirements by an additional 10 days by 2030 to mitigate risks from geopolitical crises and overseas supply disruptions.
