Australia and Indonesia have expanded their bilateral cooperation across humanitarian, security, and resilience sectors. In late July 2026, the two nations participated in the Pacific Partnership joint exercise in Sibolga, North Sumatra. Discussions focused on implementing the treaty, advancing the ratification of a Defence Cooperation Agreement. Discussions also covered maritime domain awareness, cyber security, Agreement, and developing infrastructure development in Morotai. To bolster maritime security and combat illegal fishing, Australia announced it will provide aerial drones and training to the Indonesian Coast Guard. The cooperation has nations are also preparing for the Keris Woomera military exercises in October 2026, which will integrate defensive cybersecurity components. Cooperation is further broadened to include expanding into emerging sectors such as cybercrime, critical infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. Beyond defense, the partnership prioritizes food and energy security, as well as security to address regional vulnerabilities. Additionally, both nations are promoting cultural exchange initiatives. and language learning, including initiatives to increase the study of Bahasa Indonesia in Australia.
