The Australian government has implemented a temporary pause on Subclass 462 Work and Holiday Maker visa applications for passport holders from 24 countries. The Department of Home Affairs indicated that high demand has caused applications to exceed annual grant caps for several nations, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. By August 24, the suspension was noted to include Spain and Portugal, affecting young people aged 18 to 30. While the specific reasons for the pause were not fully clarified, officials suggested the measure may help distribute applications more evenly throughout the fiscal year and facilitate processing. At that time, only five countries—San Marino, Turkey, China, India, and Vietnam—remained open for applications. Interior Minister Tony Burke acknowledged that visa processing for foreign youth has slowed, though clarity remains regarding the status of existing applications and when the program might reopen for the affected nations. By mid-September, processing delays have extended to several months for applicants applying from outside Australia. The Australian Department of Home Affairs stated that priority is being given to visa applications submitted by individuals already present in Australia. Consequently, the German Foreign Office has issued a warning advising travelers not to book flights or make significant travel arrangements until visas are officially granted. For German citizens, the upper age limit for the program was recently increased from 30 to 35.
